Dr. Kevin A. Drygas, DVM, DACVS

Surgery

Dr. Kevin Drygas, a Florida native and graduate of the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine, is a Board Certified Veterinary Surgeon. After veterinary school Dr. Drygas completed a one year general rotating internship in Denver Colorado, followed by a three year surgical residency under the mentorship of Dr. Robert Goring. As a veterinary surgeon Kevin has received advanced training in the fields of stifle stabilization, minimally invasive surgery, complex fracture fixation as well as gastrointestinal surgery.

In addition to his clinical training, Kevin has published numerous articles in peer reviewed journals on the topics of pain management, cruciate ligament (ACL) deficiency and therapy, limb sparing surgery and physical therapy as well as presented research to specialists and veterinarians at regional and national levels. He is the recent recipient of the University of Florida Outstanding Alumni Award and continues to be active in the training of veterinary students and residents.

When Dr. Drygas is not performing surgery, he is enjoying Tallahassee and spending time outdoors – surfing, fishing, exercising, and camping – with wife, Amber, daughter, Lily and son Wil. Dr. Drygas is also a proud parent of a rescue Great Dane, Ford and a rescue French Bulldog, Roma.

Dr. Mark C. Walker, BVSc, DACVIM

Internal Medicine

Dr. Walker originates from Auckland, New Zealand. He graduated from Massey University in 1990 with a Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine. After working in a referral clinic in Liverpool, England, he was appointed the position of Junior Lecturer at Massey University. Dr. Walker completed a residency in small animal internal medicine at the University of Florida in 1999, the same year he became a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine.

Dr. Walker’s primary interests include patient diagnosis and management as well as actively contributing to veterinary continuing education. He has lectured in the advanced small animal medicine course at the University of Florida and he presents seminars, lectures and workshops to veterinarians locally and nationally. He received the Small Animal Chapter Prize in Small Animal Medicine from the Australian College of Veterinary Scientists. Dr. Walker is a member of the American Animal Hospital Association, Florida Veterinary Medical Association, Big Bend Veterinary Medical Association and the Comparative Gastroenterology Society.

Dr. Walker has a number of journal and proceedings publications. He has authored chapters in the second and third edition of The 5 Minute Veterinary Consult and third edition of Slatter’s Small Animal Surgery textbook. Dr. Walker’s medical interests include cardiology and gastroenterology. Dr. Walker is married to Dr. Olga Walker and they have four children, Elizabeth, Jack, Cameron, and Max.

Dr. Paul J. Sorrentino, DVM

Internal Medicine

Dr. Sorrentino was born in New Jersey but has lived most of his life in the north Florida area. He is familiar with the Tallahassee area and completed an undergraduate degree in Biology from Florida State University in 1997. He has been practicing veterinary medicine since 2005 after completed his veterinary degree at the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine.

Following graduation, Dr. Sorrentino practiced as an associate veterinarian in private practice in Tampa, Florida for 1 year prior to joining North Florida Veterinary Specialists in 2007. There he served as a staff veterinarian and completed a residency training program in small animal internal medicine with Dr. Mark Walker as one of his mentors. He has passed his internal medicine boards and is awaiting acceptance of his publication prior to receiving final diplomate status in the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM).

Dr. Sorrentino has special interests in small animal cardiology and the diagnosis and treatment of immune mediated hemolytic anemia and thrombocytopenia.

In his spare time, Dr. Sorrentino enjoys playing golf and surfing. He is the proud parent of a boxer-mix Max and a tabby-cat Sam.

Dr. Steven Neihaus, DVM, DACVS

Dr. Neihaus is a Chicago area native and came to the surgery department of Capital Veterinary Specialists in May 2015. He attended the University of Florida in Gainesville for his undergraduate education. After graduating from the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine, Dr. Neihaus spent a year as a general practitioner before going on to complete a rotating internship at the Animal Emergency and Referral Center (now Blue Pearl Veterinary Partners) in Northbrook, Illinois. During his residency at Affiliated Veterinary Specialists under Dr. Robert Goring, Dr. Neihaus published multiple research papers, presented at national veterinary conferences and was the recipient of the prestigious Clinical Research Award at the American College of Veterinary Surgeons Residents Forum.

Dr. Neihaus’ professional interests include minimally invasive surgery (arthroscopy and laparoscopy), oncologic surgery and soft tissue reconstruction, and complex orthopedic and fracture repair. As a dedicated member of his community, Dr. Neihaus also enjoys giving back. Dr. Neihaus donates his time and surgical skills to help special needs cases from various rescue organizations around the country. Dr. Neihaus is a member of the Veterinary Society of Surgical Oncologists, Veterinary Orthopedic Society, and local and national veterinary medical associations.

Dr. Neihaus and his wife, who is also a veterinarian, live in the Mandarin area with their two sons and Dalmation mix, Lucy. When not at work, Dr. Neihaus enjoys fishing, boating, playing and coaching ice hockey and cheering on his favorite sports teams – the Chicago Bears, Blackhawks and the Florida Gators.

Dr. Carl T. Jehn, DVM, MS DACVS

Dr. Carl Jehn grew up in Wisconsin and graduated from the University of Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine in 2002. After veterinary school Dr. Jehn completed a one year rotating internship at the University of Georgia, followed by a three year surgical residency at the University of Florida. While completing his surgical residency, Dr. Jehn also attended graduate school at the University of Florida and concurrently obtained a Masters Degree in Veterinary Science. As a veterinary surgeon, Dr. Jehn has received advanced training in the fields of knee surgery, fracture fixation, minimally invasive orthopedic surgery, cancer related surgery, negative pressure therapy for septic abdomens, arthroscopy and laparoscopic surgery, gastrointestinal surgery, spinal surgery, vacuum assisted closure, wound management and reconstructive surgery.

In addition to his clinical training, Dr. Jehn has published numerous articles in peer reviewed veterinary journals on the topics of hip surgery, wound care, liver surgery, NSAID therapy, critical care, limb sparing surgery and cancer treatment as well as presented research to specialists and veterinarians at regional and national conferences. Dr. Jehn has been in practice in South Florida for the past eight years and has recently moved with his family to Tallahassee. Dr. Jehn enjoys spending time with his wife (a Seminole who graduated from Florida State in 2001), their two children and many pets. He also enjoys the outdoors including fishing, skiing and diving.

Dr. Sofia C. Morales, DVM, DACVIM

Small Animal Internal Medicine

Dr. Sofia Morales, born in Michigan, has Spanish and Cuban roots. She is a board certified internist who graduated with honors in 2001 from Purdue University Veterinary School of Medicine. She then completed a 1 year general rotating internship immediately followed by a 3 year residency in internal medicine at University of Minnesota where she stayed on as an adjunct clinical professor for another year. She gained diplomate status of the College of Veterinary Internal Medicine in 2007. After her academic career, Dr. Morales served the South Florida community for almost 10 years in the field of internal medicine.

Dr. Morales has special interests in the field of infectious diseases, auto-immune illnesses, nephrology, as well as in chronic inflammatory hepatic and intestinal illnesses. Her main focus remains on client and technician/nurse education. She firmly believes the pet owner and nursing staff are essential parts of any treatment plan and its success. Dr. Morales also knows that the referring veterinarian is a key element to providing a pet with the best care.

Dr. Morales, her husband, her child as well as her 2 dogs have relocated to Tallahassee to join and support the community. During their free time, the family enjoys the pleasures of just being together. The couple loves traveling back home (Canary Islands in Spain), skiing, fishing, and cooking a good paella.

Dr. Diane T. Lewis, DVM, DACVD

Dermatology

After graduating from The Florida State University, Dr. Diane Lewis received her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Florida. After spending three years in general private practice in Kissimmee and Gainesville, Florida, and Sydney, Australia, Dr. Lewis completed a one year internship in small animal medicine and surgery, followed by a two year residency in dermatology at Louisiana State University. She qualified and became board-certified in dermatology in 1992. She has published numerous book chapters and articles and has lectured extensively across the United States, Europe, and Australia. Her special interests are allergy, ear infections, cutaneous infectious diseases, endocrinology, and dermatopathology.

Dr. Lewis has practiced dermatology across the United States and also has a private specialty dermatology practice in Gainesville, Florida, as well as an adjunct faculty position at the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Florida. She enjoys resident and intern training and the many patients and their owners that she has come to know over the years. When not working, Dr. Lewis enjoys traveling, hiking, reading, yoga, weight training, friends, and her family.

Dr. Kristin Reger, DVM

Intern

Dr. Kristin Reger grew up in Jacksonville, Florida. She was raised a Gator and received both her undergraduate degree and her DVM from the University of Florida, graduating from the UF College of Veterinary Medicine in May 2015. She decided to pursue an internship after graduation to further her skills in small animal medicine, soft tissue surgery, and diagnostic imaging. When Dr. Reger is not busy with her duties as an intern, she enjoys trips to the beaches and springs around Florida, cheering on the Gators and the Jacksonville Jaguars, and watching movies with her husband, Robert.

Dr. Rick Alleman, DVM, PhD. Diplomate ABVP & ACVP

Clinical Pathologist

Dr. Rick Alleman received his DVM from Louisiana State University and practiced companion animal medicine and surgery for 9 years in private small animal practice in New Orleans. In 1987 he was board certified as a Diplomate of the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners with a specialty in companion animal practice. He was recertified in 1997 and 2007.

Dr. Alleman completed a clinical pathology residency at the University of Florida and became a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Pathologists with a specialty in clinical pathology and completed his PhD degree in molecular biology of vector-borne diseases. He is a former Professor, Service Chief, Resident Coordinator and Director of Laboratories at the University of Florida, College of Veterinary Medicine, where he was on faculty for 20 years. He is currently Manager of Lighthouse Veterinary Consultants. He is a consultant and serves on the Advisory Boards for IDEXX Laboratories, Merck Animal Health and Zoetis.

Dr. David A. Jiménez, DVM, DACVR

Dr. Jiménez grew up in Miami, Florida. After completing a Bachelor of Science at Florida International University, he migrated north to Indiana where he graduated from Purdue University’s College of Veterinary Medicine. He then went westward to Denver, Colorado. Dr. Jiménez completed an internship in diagnostic imaging and stayed in Denver for two years in small animal primary care. He then returned to Florida to complete an additional diagnostic imaging internship at Affiliated Veterinary Specialists in the city of Maitland. Dr. Jiménez then made his way back up to the I-70 corridor to complete a three-year diagnostic imaging residency at Kansas State University.

Dr. Jiménez is an Associate Professor at the University of Georgia, where he has taught students, trained house officers, and practiced since 2009. He is currently the Chief of Staff of Diagnostic Imaging and Radiation Therapy. He routinely manages and interprets studies across imaging modalities, including radiographs, ultrasonography, MRI, CT, and nuclear scintigraphy. He has an emphasis on small animal imaging and continues to publish peer-reviewed articles on varied imaging topics. He is excited to bring his expertise to Capital Veterinary Specialists as an teleradiologist and imaging consultant.

His home is made complete by his wife Amy and two rescue dogs, Dexter the beagle and a mixed-breed named Drogo. He may be seen after work and weekends trail running or mountain biking.
